Manuka Honey – It’s Your New Skincare Weapon!

Natural beauty products are widely known for their benefits. A little googling will bring up thousands of results on the varying natural products on the market and their uses. And it’s no surprise that these type of products are becoming more popular, after all, it’s much cheaper to purchase a jar of natural goodness than it is to splash out on a luxe skin cream. Since falling in love with the Antipodes Manuka Honey Mask, and noticing the marvellous results it’s had on my skin in terms of helping to clear my hormonal blemishes, I’ve been wanting to give natural manuka honey a try.

What makes manuka honey so awesome?

Hailing from New Zealand, manuka honey boasts anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. In other words, it’s great for healing blemishes, soothing irritation and redness and helping to clear your complexion. It’s also used to treat eczema, tone the skin, as well as aiding sore throats, wounds and infections.

Most manuka honey is given an UMF (unique manuka factor) rating, with the higher the number, the better the quality of honey and the higher the antioxidants. Honey with a higher grade is more expensive, and as this was my first foray into the world of manuka honey, my budget could only be limited to an inexpensive pot. Generally, though, you’re looking around the £10 mark if you purchase from a health food brand or retailer.

So, has my skin improved? I like to use manuka honey as a mask treatment, directly applying it all over my face (avoiding the eye area). While it feels sticky upon application, its surprisingly easy to remove with warm water and leaves no residue (though, I’d recommend using a toner after use to eliminate any leftover traces). After a 20 minute treatment, my complexion feels super soft, calm and refreshed. Any blemishes tend to heal quicker and the redness is less noticeable. My oily skin is hydrated but balanced.

As well as using it as a mask, manuka honey makes a great cleanser. Simply mix honey with some hot water and apply all over the face before removing with a warm, damp cloth.

All in all, this could be the new must have in your skincare arsenal.

Make Your Matte Lipstick Look Kick-Ass!

There’s no doubt that this summer’s biggest beauty trend is matte lips. A velvety matte finish can make your pout look fuller and more defined, perfect for those of us that adore plump lips but don’t want to go down the cosmetic enhancement route. While there’s an abundance of lip cremes on the market that will transform your lips in an instant, the majority of textures can appear drying. Flaking or cracked looking lips are hardly a beauty trend you want to get on board with.

So, how can you keep your matte lipstick looking as incredible as its first application?

It’s all about the prep. Preparing your lips for a matte texture is the key to ensuring your pout stays luscious all day long.

Scrub, scrub, scrub

First, you need to exfoliate. Lip exfoliators have been around for a while, but it’s likely a surge in popularity is imminent. If you’re in the mood for purchasing a polishing scrub, then look no further than the Bliss Fabulips Sugar Lip Scrub. The sweet scent of vanilla, orange and almond gently buffs away dry, rough flakes to reveal sensationally soft and smooth skin. For those who prefer a DIY option, a little honey and brown sugar makes the perfect exfoliating lip scrub. Secondly, you need moisture. Lip balms are everywhere on the beauty market, however, one of the best is the Nuxe Reve De Miel Nourishing Lip Balm –  an intensive hydrating balm for soft and smooth lips. Alternatively, a great budget option is Palmers Cocoa Butter Lip Balm.

Prime for perfection

Once your lips are soft, smooth, and hydrated, it’s time for colour. For matte lip colour that’s long-lasting, NYX Lip Primer is your base superhero! Providing a uniform canvas for your lip colour, this primer prevents feathering and fading, as well as ensuring your lipstick lasts. For extra protection against smudging or bleeding, NYX Wonder Pencil is a welcomed addition. This nude coloured pencil, available in 3 shades, can be used to line lips, or for brightening eyes and concealing – a real multitasker!

Choose your brand

For your lip colour, different brands excel in matte territory. For a budget matte lip product, you can’t go wrong with the Sleek Matte Me Lip Creams. With several new shades just released, there’s a shade for all in this line up. Lightweight, opaque and soft, for smooth application, these lip creams are the perfect choice for matte newbies. For higher end lip colours, try MAC Retro Matte Liquid Lipcolour – saturated hues with a liquid suede finish or Nars Velvet Matte Lip Pencils for rich, creamy colour that’s non-drying.

Finally, after application, blot your lips with a tissue to remove any excess.
